Joshua Jesty is an American singer, songwriter, doctor kicker, and zombie fighter.  He became famous roughly around the time of his first solo release "Finally, Joshua Jesty if Famous, all the hits: volume 15" and continually writes, records, blogs, tours and appears in various you tube videos all while waiting tables to "keep it real"  and raising 3 sets of twins.  I'm lying about the twins but he does have a pet rabbit named Hazel who is cuter then all get out.

Early Life

Joshua Jesty was born December 23, 1979 in a doctors house not in Cleveland, but somewhere around there.  He was fortunate enough to have two awesome parents named Jon Jesty and Dodi Jesty.  He is an only child, or at least that's what he's been led to believe.

when Josh was really young, he was so into the re runs of the Monkees that his parents used to tell him in Monkee episodes how long various drives or activities would take.

around the age of 13 while at an airport waiting for his mother to return from a flight, Josh saw Little Richard exiting a plane and being taken away on one of those golf carts they have at airports.  This had no effect on him whatsoever, just like that time he saw Gene Simmons hanging outside a biker bar in Pittsburgh.

throughout his young life he didn't do much, other then break into his own house once and make a series of comical fake radio shows with his friends.  I'm sure if you listened to them now you'd be horribly bored.

at the age of 12 he had a dream that he was on stage playing a guitar for an unknown audience with and unknown band.  It was at that point that he got out of taking his piano lessons which he hated and got into playing guitar.  Even though various placements and career assessment tests told him he'd be best suited to be a poultry farmer, he couldn't help but follow that awkward and vague dream.

Career

Nugget

1994-95 Nugget is the ultimate power trio  It features Joshua on guitar, as well as his friends Russell and Nathan hitting various things like pizza boxes and broken drums, all the while singing about important issues of the day such as Gumby, getting lost in a porto potty, and narklekifos.  They play only one show in their life, but manage to record close to 70 songs within 10 rehearsals.

"Seriously" by Nugget

Remain Standing

1996-1999 during Josh's senior year in high school he records 2 records with his band "Remain Standing" as well as a solo record. While notable for the sake of quantity, Josh and Remain Standing have yet to receive Grammies for any of this work. Remain Standing will go on to have 3 farewell shows between 1998 and 1999. They just wanted to make sure they got it out of their systems I guess.

"Zelfadeltoo" by Remain Standing

"Planting Daffodils" by Remain Standing

Love Scream

1998-2000 Joshua moves to Boston to go to the Berklee School of Music and forms the Boston based "Love Scream". Love Scream will go to release their one and only full length "More Songs About the Reproductive Cycle" and tour a small amount behind it. When Coldplay's manager doesn't offer them Lobsters and Champagne immediately the groups morale dwindles and Josh runs back to Cleveland with his tail between his legs. Since the bands indefinite hiatus the members have all kept in close contact and even reunited a few times to record a song here and there and eat Chinese buffet food together.

"My Dilemma" by Love Scream

"Girl I Actually Love" You by Love Scream

"Animal Magnetism" by Love Scream

Love Screams only full length "More Songs about the Reproductive Cycle" is available through Cdbaby. Click Hear and enjoy.

The Feel Bads

2000-2002 Joshua hastily forms a new band called "The Feel Bads". the first incarnation of the Feel Bads is a four person band that plays songs that Love Scream never got around to recording. Dan Meath of Love Scream joins up with the Feel Bads right about the original line up has had it with wearing doctor scrubs and the group quickly disbands. A few months later Josh reinvents the Feel Bads as a Sketch Comedy troupe that plays songs from time to time. The group features a merchandise girl, a backstage manager, a bitter sequencer and a sock puppet that has no sense of morality. Eventually the group grows to 6 people and an endless amount of stage props before it can sustain itself no longer. Recordings of the sock puppet known as "Senor BJ" can be found here

this is exploding

2002-2007: Joshua has the fortune upon stumbling across the fellows who will turn out to be "this is exploding". The band records and EP and a LP, and takes to the road playing over 80 dates in the Midwest and Northeast before their van runs out of steam and there wallets run out of bling. this is exploding is currently trying to find their lost record, but oh man, that sucker is lost.

Joshua Jesty

around the summer of 2006, Joshua had enough solo recordings to put out his first solo record.  The homeless guy picture was taken by Jen Graven in New York City, and the record was put out to little fan fare.  As this is exploding dissolved Joshua took all 200 records he had pressed and drove around the midwest and northeastern states.  6 months and 500 copies of the record later he posthumously entitled his tour the "indie guys with acoustic guitars must grow bears to sustain themselves" tour.

since 2007 he has been writing and recording what he feels is his first true solo record, which was initially given the title "Finally, Joshua Jesty is making a record with a short title, and the title of the record is "girl".  However, in many circles, the record is simply known as "girl".  While recording "...girl" Joshua also took the time to participate in the Cleveland Lottery League which pairs local Cleveland musicians together at random and was a part of the ensemble known as Bourbon Outfitters as well as writing and recording a record during the month of February for the "national write a record month" competition.  this record was entitled "Finally, Joshua Jesty is February".  It was posted on his website for free download from April through June of 2008.  In 2009, Joshua Jesty made another February record entitled "Finally, Joshua Jesty is Februarier", also available from April through June of 2009.

Joshua has recorded a series of you tube videos that consist of mostly cover tunes and random skits.  There are no plans to release these in any official manner.

there is yet another release in the works which is available to stream on Imeem entitled "Finally, Joshua Jesty will be with you in a minute" which consists of minute long songs he wrote during some down time from touring in 2008.  It is set for release within the next year.

"..girl" will be released officially on August 8th, with a big CD release show in Cleveland and has been described by Joshua as "a record about loss that turns into a record about how loss is gain."

Various other side projects

here is as complete a list as can be found of other side projects Joshua Jesty has been involved with, in some cases, very very briefly.

- the total rejectoids (wrote and recorded several cassettes of mindless fart joke music-noise with this band, it's horrible, if you ever uncover any of it, throw it away)

- Noon (recorded and played banjo and guitar on her early demos)

- Senor BJ (helped record and perform on his favorite socks recordings)

- Bourbon Outfitters (helped co-write and performed on there 5 song EP)

- Bone Dust (played bass for one show, it was for a childrens festival.  Does the name Bone Dust and the phrase Children's Festival go together? you fill in the blank as to the outcome of that)

- the Silent Years (played tambourine live for one song, damn they are so good)

Controversy over his fame

Joshua Jesty has often been criticized by himself for accusations of fame.  He often responds to his inner demons by pointing out that regardless of whether he's actually famous or not, he's got a lot of good things going for him.  When his inner voice gets the best of him, he simply turns on any VH1 reality show and says out loud "if that's what passes for fame these days, then forget about it".

Controversy over his tendency to write his own bios

It has been pointed out by many scholars and critics that Joshua Jesty tends to write his own bios.  In an article of "J" Magazine (the magazine he publishes himself that's written by men with rabbits who have an tendency to write lots and lots of indie rock for men with rabbits who have a tendency to write lots and lots of indie rock, it always features a picture of Joshua on the cover) Joshua gave this little snippet when questioned about his frequent autobiographical malfunctions

"I write my own music, I record it, I wash my own hair, I have a small poodle pick me up in its teeth and drag me to work everyday, I make my own coffee, and I realize I don't like coffee and pour it down the nearest persons pants, I publish my own music, I make my own websites, I book my own tours, I'm pretty DIY, I don't see why I can't write my own bios.  I'm the only one that could tell you about that poodle dragging me to work thing... why? because no one has asked how I get to work, and let me tell you, that dog hates me heart and soul, assuming he has one"

controversy over his cooking abilities

Joshua has been attacked several times for his cooking abilities.  Despite the attacks he says he will move forward with his plan to open a chain restaurant featuring several "crazy" types of quesadillas, a booming sound system that will play the sounds of whatever animal you just ordered for your quesadilla screaming in pure agony.  A 7 scoop ice cream sundae that will only be served if you're having a birthday and is accompanied by a birthday "song" that consists of looped guitar feedback and china crash cymbals being bashed 2 inches away from the birthday boy or girls ears while a chorus of people dressed in "bleeding clown" outifts sing "american pie" until you finish every last bite of the 7 scoop sundae. For adults looking to try a new kind of aged drink such as hard cider, there will be an exclusive alcoholic beverage available called "hard milk" which is whole milk aged in a dry warm area for a period of 5-10 years.  That stuff will seriously mess you up.  The chain will be called "Uncle Justy's Don't Sue Me Fun Time Palace".

controversy over his love of pumpkin spice

there's really no controversy over that.  That stuff is great.

- "Joshua Jesty's 'Girl' fills the void between Sun Kil Moon and Built To Spill via a varied collection of indie-inspired songs that should propel him out of the Midwest and into the spotlight."

Joshua Jesty Finally, Joshua Jesty Is Famous, All The Hits, Volume 15
2008, Joshua Jesty

Your first impression of Joshua Jesty might be that hes a funny guy. To look at the title of his CD or listen to the first track, a rap tune called The Masters Back, youd expect hes a novelty act. Far from it. Jesty is a brooding songwriter who plays in dark and sometimes muddy tones until he finds a seam of beauty and then he rides it for all its worth. Jesty has an album of 21 songs called Finally, Joshua Jesty Is Famous, All The Hits: Volume 15. You cant buy the album in stores, but you can download all of the songs off his webpage. Jesty has a unique set of payment options. You can donate to him what you think the album is worth, if youre broke you can forward the page to however many people you think its worth ($10=10 people), or you can donate to a charity and tell him about it.

So Joshua Jesty is unique, but what about the music? Take a look at the epic that is The River Curves, comparing the curves of a river to those of a beloved. The tune sounds like something Radiohead might have written, and has a very repressed sadness that underlies it. The quasi-Lo-Fi sound helps in setting this mood, as does the layer guitar/piano/bass wall of sound Jesty captures on the disc. Jestys website says he wrote it while going to the bathroom. Just thought youd like to know. Stephanie is another song full of regret, balancing its sweetness with controlled fear.

My favorite song here is Ms. Closed Off. Its a great Matchbox 20 style song. Very musically interesting and introspective; A quiet opening turns into a heavy guitar motif that is very tuneful and full of great, mellow hooks. This song has commercial potential; I could see it placed in a movie or television soundtrack with great ease. Junk Your Head is a great rocking tune with angular guitar work and frenetic energy. The song is part punk and part pop and would do well on radio. Other highlights include Turf The Law, The One Inside Your head, Get To You and Thats When She Smiles.

Joshua Jesty is refreshing. There are no pop filters here. No distinct attempts to be commercial. Joshua Jesty captures the innate sense of musical creation. Hes writing for himself, not pop radio. The results are mixed. A handful of the 21 tracks offered here are sketchbook material. Most of them are good to really good listening material, but there are three or four tracks on the CD with significant potential. The willingness to create for himself and not take himself too seriously bodes well for Joshua Jesty. The results of his writing and performance make for good (and sometimes great) listening. I suspect these abilities will grow over time and he will become a complete songwriter (with a slightly warped world view). Finally, Joshua Jesty Is Famous, All The Hits: Volume 15 might just be prophetic.

Rating: 3.5 Stars (Out of 5)

Finally, Joshua Jesty Is Famous All the Hits: Volume 15

Theres so many different flavors on Joshua Jestys (of This is Exploding) solo release you gotta lick each song a couple times and take a good swig of water before the next to get the full effect. These songs stretch out over a span of six years, and just as one goes through different phases throughout that amount of time so does the music on Finally, Joshua Jesty is Famous All the Hits: Volume 15.
The first track, "The Masters Back" invokes fuzzy memories of the Beastie Boys early stuff complete with that charming wheeet wheee wheeet thing white rappers do with their mouth.

"Monday Up In Flames" and it's dejected chorus immediately bring to mind the sucky after school she-didnt-notice-me-today gloom of male adolescence, while it's successor "The One Inside Your Head" is completely opposite, the skipping heartbeats of a boy who has finally found that carefree giddy love.

Whether he be jamming on the cowbell (I do believe I hear some in "Junk Your Head"!) or keeping it simple on the guitar the constant in Jesty's music is his poem-like lyrics, especially on tracks like "Stephanie", "She Changed (To Feel Good)", and "Thats When She Smiles" -- all quieter gems on the twenty-one track album.

Even though Jestys been in music for several years and in almost as many bands it seems like his soul is still unscathed by the absurdity of the business aspect of music and hes offering up his full record for free download on his site. But its not this fact alone that makes him unpretentious, its the moments on Finally like "Bad German Techno" (which sounds exactly like bad German techno) where hes just doing his thing, whatever it was at that moment, and sharing it with whomever cares to listen.

- you are the king of choruses my friend. like if there was a reality show where every week they gave 16 strangers a short phrase and said 'here, turn these 3 words into a catchy and interesting chorus' you would win the immunity necklace every week. seriously. it's amazing. i wish i could wi-fi into your head and hear music like you do. keep up the good work.

review from michael flynn

- I can't quite decide which track is my favorite--it's between "The River Curves" and "the One Inside Your Head". "River" has a great arrangement and vocal melody, and of course the lyrics are fantastic. Love the drums and guitar on "Inside Your Head," too.

A few other things I really like:

Lyrics on "Turf My Lawn," especially the closing lines.

the minimal arrangement on "if you let me in," which I think turns its lyrics into a type of double entendre where "changing your mind" could mean a few different things. "She Changed to Feel Good" has a nice hook.

The backing vocals on "Get to You"

"Stephanie" sounds really good in the pared-down arrangement with you and guitar.

"Ms. Closed Off" has excellent lyrics--I just love the story it tells, and I think just about anybody can relate to it. Like the dynamics on "This Town is Quicksand" "Bump" has an interesting, drifting atmosphere

Can't really offer too much critical insight on "The Master's Back" or "Bad German Techno," but I don't think that was really the goal, either. Heh. written by Joe Tangeri

-While Cleveland's This Is Exploding are still working on their second disc, guitarist and vocalist, Joshua Jesty has released upon the unsuspecting denizens of the internets, loads of solo material, under the title Finally Joshua Jesty Is Famous, All The Hits, Vol. 15. Many of the cuts feature a quieter and more intimate style than the ballistic and bombastic This Is Exploding, giving the listener an opportunity to really dig into the emotional qualities of Jesty's words and voice.

A clear standout on Finally Joshua Jesty is the reserved and brooding number, "This Town Is Quicksand." Singing with a hush, and backed with an accoustic guitar, the occasional muted electric guitar, and some simple beats, Joshua Jesty voices sentiments of loss, isolation, and helplessness -- feelings familiar to any young man living in an old rust belt town, as he watches opportunity pass him by. written by the mighty Bill Lipold of www.Irockcleveland.blogspot.com

-Dude. I listened to yer rekkit on me headphones last night....The River Curves is still the baddest song you've written....Aftertaste is great too....I'd like to give it few more listens.....FEEL THE RHYTHM! www.myspace.com/jkaler

-wow, that was awesome of you to put your cd online so that we could all have instant download satisfaction!
and here I didn't think I'd be able to hear any bad German techno tonight! I was VERY wrong, that's for sure!!!!!! www.myspace.com/snugglepooh

-I can't explain it. I don't know why. And I can't praise you enough for your fantastic gift. I've just scratched the surface of your solo music as I down-loaded one... then another... then the entire thing - because I really want to evaluate it, a la car stereo... It really is true Art. This is the kind of music I pour over; and I have some intellectual friends that will pour over this, too. I mean - there should be some kind of government grant for the things you create. And we're not talking the same radio-friendly shit that Berklee advocates, but an extension of your personality and a record of culture... true Art. Funny, I still listen to More Songs... AND Made of Gold (can't really call that an album, can we? though it was the first musical experience I was ever proud to have been a part of). I even whipped out the original recording of "Personal Space"... Yeah, I still have the DAT (Note: the following recordings mentioned were Love Scream recordings as Christian produced a bunch of demos and an early record for us).

So, I just sat and read your entire website as I bounced from track to track. I don't know if you realized that my website is very similar to your's. I have the same kind of setup -lyrics and descriptions for all of my older songs. (Haven't had time on the new stuff, 'cause I'm still recording it). I even have a "Birthday Song"!! Although it's much more upbeat, it did stem from a rather crummy birthday... (www.swbrecords.com - in case you're curious)

I don't know - maybe I'm going over the top just a bit, because it's the witching hour and I'm super emo and creative or whatever, but I want you to know that the word "genius" comes to mind... and I cannot in good moral whatever listen to this music without sending you money (aside: I know all of you are feeling this). So when I get my fat ass a PayPal account, which I need to do this week, in fact, expect a fair royalty.

Keep doing your thing. And let me know when you've done some more... www.myspace.com/joezero
